This is one of the first restaurants I heard was transforming the streets of NYC to a city of cartivores. The other is the Dessert Truck, which I heard just got started back up again after a short hiatus. The Calexico Cart is reknown for its Carne Asada bringing authentic Mexican to the streets of downtown. There was no way we were going to be able to avoid getting the beef, especially after a morning where my protein intake consisted of crumbled peanuts.
Look at me, worried about my protein intake when I haven’t had a good salad in weeks. Zora wasn’t worried either; she met me after taking care of a leak at her place. I forgot to mention, I spent the morning SOAKED at Starbucks after walking 3/4 of a mile in a torrential downpour (OK, more like 0.3 miles – map).
One of the reasons I was excited to have Zora along for the ride is because she has written for publications like Moon and Rough Guides. I told her that I wanted her job and she said whoa nelly. Apparently it’s not very lucrative. I don’t know what she means by lucrative, but if I could live in a country and get paid to eat and travel for free, that’s my kind of lucrative. She said it might not even be that lucrative.
We went back to Starbucks, bought a few teas so we didn’t feel bad about using the tables, and dug in:
So in conclusion: get the carne asada, get the guac, and be liberal with the chipotle mayo. They’re open in two spots in the city, and if it’s a rainy day, you should check the twitter feed to see if they’re open (one was closed on this rainy day). They’re great about updates.
