All right – this was a tough one. Back in December, there were a couple of days where I was freaking out about the project. I thought I wouldn’t have enough restaurants to fill the docket. I panicked and started calling restaurants that were advertising on Yelp, some that were referred by people as places that were clamoring for press, and friends’ places. Slim’s falls into the third category. I love this place as a bar. It’s certainly one of my favorites in the city at which to hang out. When I read the reviews about the food, however, they came across as less than stellar.
In the end, I had restaurants calling me to get on the project. I had my pick of the litter when it came to where I wanted to go and ended up snagging some pretty awesome places along the way through word of mouth. I’d been interested in substituting another restaurant in place of Slim’s, but I didn’t want to hurt my friend’s feelings about declining participation. At the same time, I want you to be able to respect the integrity of my reviews and the project dictates that I must write about the place.
I’m not going to be making any friends here, but hopefully I won’t lose any over this. I’ll try to keep it positive.
Dewars 12 Year This is my jam right here. Scott is the guy that got me into scotch. I came by his place this summer as I was contemplating trying to live in a van on the streets of Manhattan – I figured I’d just get the PrimoSpot iPhone app (link) and chill out somewhere near a 24 hour NYSC. That plan lasted all of three days (I did manage to survive sleeping in my civic for three days, though). Shrimp and Asparagus Both Alex and I loved these. We’d ordered the buffalo shrimp, actually. Scott indicated that he modified the shrimp with buffalo sauce and put in to a salad, we said that sounds good but this is what came out. It was barbecue shrimp, and this is something that I would never order, but it ended up being pretty damn tasty. It wasn’t oversauced, the barbecue was light and tangy, and the asparagus grilled and crisp – our favorite part of the meal. Granted, it was really unfair of me to slate this place at 6:30 on Saturday with a pregnant woman. I’ve been to Slim’s a bunch from midnight-4:00 AM and there is no other place in the West Village like it. There are stuffy bars, freakshows, complete dives, but no other regular, neighborhood bars that aren’t overrun with those other types. The atmosphere is great, the people are always cool, but the food isn’t so much hit or miss as it is a miss. You should know that this meal was comped by Automatic Slims, and I feel like this is the best medicine as far as my response here goes. I promise to come back in six months and re-review to see if anything’s changed (on my own dime) and will update you guys.
